Investigation of Problematic Internet Usage in Middle Adolescence Stage in Terms of Demographic Variables

Abstract

The primary aim of this study is to investigate problematic internet usage of adolescents by demographic variables such as gender, smartphone availabilities and educational background of their parents. Then, it was intended to reveal problematic internet usage scores of adolescents, their internet usage purposes. In this case, data were collected from 1886 students in middle adolescent period from different regions of Turkey. One-way analysis of variance and multi-factor analysis of variance were used in the analysis of data. According to preliminary findings, Deterioration in Functioning, Socialization and Total Scale scores of males are higher than scores of females. Secondly, all subscale and total scores of those who have smartphones are higher than those who do not. It can be said that 304 (16.1%) adolescents are problematic internet users. Finally, it can be said that adolescents use the internet mostly to access social media.

Bu araştırmanın birinci amacı, ergenlerin problemli internet kullanımını cinsiyet, akıllı telefonunun olup olmama ve anne-baba eğitim düzeyine göre incelemektir. İkinci olarak, problemli internet kullanım düzeylerini ve interneti kullanım amaçlarını ortaya koymaktır. Bu amaçla Türkiye’nin farklı bölgelerinden orta ergenlik döneminde olan 1886 öğrenciden veri toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde tek yönlü varyans analizi ve çok faktörlü varyans analizi kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen ilk bulgulara göre, erkek ergenlerin İşlevsellikte Bozulma, Sosyalizasyon ve Toplam ölçek puanları kadın ergenlerden daha yüksektir. İkinci olarak, akıllı telefonu olan ergenlerin tüm alt ölçek ve toplam puanları olmayanlara göre daha yüksektir. Son olarak, ergenlerin 304’ünün (%16,1) problemli internet kullanıcısı olduğu ve ergenlerin interneti en çok sosyal ağlara girmek için kullandıkları söylenebilir.
