A STUDY ON THE USE OF CLASSICAL POETRY IN TEACHING TURKISH
Özet
In the analyses of poetries, classical methods, translating into modern Turkish, and interpretation are used. However, analysis of the poems through classical methods can not reveal their lyrical features. The lyrical features of these poems should be analyzed within the framework of constructivist approach by looking at the effects of sound characteristics on the creation of meaning and feeling and phonetics-semantics relationships. In the present study, samples of classical poetry were quantitatively analyzed within the context of constructivist approach in education in terms of their phonetics-semantics relationships. In the phonetic analysis, based on the word-scoring table, features of the phonemes found in the words and the scores they get were evaluated. In the semantic analysis, the relationships between the scores obtained by the words and the meaning they convey were interpreted. The samples of the classical poetry which were investigated were found to be emotionally strong poems, hence, it is believed that it will be beneficial to include them in elementary school Turkish textbooks. It is a shortcoming for the Turkish language textbooks not to include the samples of Turkish poetry. Therefore, it is not possible to make use of Classical poems in Turkish language education. The samples of classical poetry have the potential of improving students' vocabulary repertoire and emotional expression skills.
