The Effects of Agricultural Policies on Family Farming: The Case of Mugla Villages

Abstract

This study examines the results of changes in agricultural policies on the selected 10 villages in Mugla, Turkey. For this purpose, interviews and focus group interviews were conducted in 10 selected villages. On the research, changes in agriculture were intended to define the reasons of the changes together with the effects of globalization. According to research findings, in 30 years period (intense application of neo-liberal policies in global and national levels) there were serious changes in agricultural activities including quantity and types of production. Furthermore, purpose of agricultural production has changed mostly from production for market to self-consumption (livelihood). The reasons for these changes can be named as global and national level agricultural policies, market conditions, demographic factors and environmental factors.
