The antibacterial activity of Anthemis chia L. flower against mastitis pathogens and antioxidant capacity of the various extracts
Özet
In this study, Anthemis chia L. was collected from different localities of Mugla in Turkey. Antibacterial and antioxidant activities of Anthemis chia L. have not been reported to the present day. The aim of the present study was to investigate the in vitro antibacterial and antioxidant activity of various extracts of Anthemis chia L. flowers. These extracts were screened for antibacterial activity against mastitis pathogens. These bacteria include 2 Staphylococcus aureus and 5 coagulase negative Staphylococci. Antibacterial activities of extracts were determined by the disc diffusion method. Methanolic flower extract showed a maximum zone of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus-17 and coagulase negative Staphylococci-37 (CNS) by disc diffusion method. Anthemis chia L. flower extract did not show antibacterial activity against coagulase negative Staphylococci-22 and 33. Furthermore aqueous extracts of flowers have not antibacterial activity. MIC values of flower extracts against the bacterial strains were studied by serial dilution method. The antioxidant activities of flower different extracts were also determined by DPPH method using Trolox as standard. The value found in DPPH method wass highly effective (88%). As a result, the in vitro studies clearly indicate that the aqueous extracts of Anthemis chia flowers have significant antioxidant activity. The extract might be helpful in preventing the process of different oxidative stress. In addition, Anthemis chia could be used in treating mastitis caused by the test bacteria. The flower methanol and ethanol extracts have antioxidant and antibacterial potential.
