The purpose of the present paper was to determine the effectiveness of ozone-depleted vegetable (olive) oil in healing pressure ulcers. In the experimental study, 21 male Sprague Dawley rats were used. The rats were divided into three equal groups. The ischaemia reperfusion cycle model was used to create pressure ulcers in the rats. The model used for 3 days until the wound was opened. Transparent acetate (0.1 × 0.1 mm2) was placed on the wound and the wound area was drawn with acetate pen. Data were evaluated with AutoCAD. Measurements were made on days 0, 7, 14 and 21, and the effect of ozone on wound healing was compared with the other two groups. Wound area averages were calculated as 63.03 ± 19.90 mm2 for the ozone group, 61.48 ± 14.81 mm2 for the olive oil group and 50.89 ± 4.30 mm2 for the 0.9% NaCl group. The percentage of wound area change was 97.35% for the ozone group, 91.88% for the olive oil group and 86.87% for the 0.9% NaCl group. It was concluded that ozone oil applied in a rat ischaemia reperfusion cycle model is effective in wound healing, suggesting that ozone oil can be used in pressure ulcer dressings. © 2018 Scibulcom Ltd.
