dc.description.abstract | Objective: This research was conducted to investigate and analyze the physical conditions of primary schools in Sivas, Turkey. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised a total of 72 primary schools in the municipality boundary of Sivas province. The data were collected through a questionary form, namely The School Environmental Health Standards (SESS). These standards were defined in 1996 and 2000 by the Institute of Turkish Standards (TSE). Results: The capacity of each classroom was 41 or higher in 38.5% of the primary schools. There was not any traffic control system in front of 86.1% of the schools, and any infirmary in 93.1% of them. School lighting of 66.7% and mean area per student in 79.2% were not in compliance with the standards. Number of toilets was not adequate for males (66.7%) and females (52.8%). In addition, general cleanliness of toilets were below the standard in 66.7% of the schools. Conclusion: Physical characteristics of the primary schools were determined not to compliant with SESS, and these conditions create risks for student health. | en_US |
