dc.description.abstract | Large-scale and persistent deformations can be observed when the ratio of the stresses around the underground opening to the strength of the rock mass is unfavourably disturbed. Such ground behaviour is called squeezing ground. In order to cope with the squeezing ground behaviour, the design and application of the support system can be executed either by using heavy support systems having a rigid character or yielding light support systems. The underground openings were driven by using two different support concepts in the same geological unit. The behaviour of two systems was compared to each other by using computational approaches and the field observations. While the rigid support system blocked the deformations by accumulating a considerable support stress, the light yielding support with deformation gap converged to a stable state by allowing deformation in a controlled manner. Stable underground openings were established by employing two different excavation and support schemes under different operational restrictions.
