dc.description.abstract | Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between the levels of 25- Hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)-D), parathyroid hormone (PTH) and basal ganglia calcification (BGC) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Method: The study population consisted of 32 patients with PD who were admitted to the Neurology Clinic of Antakya State Hospital in 2010 as well as 32 healthy control subjects. Serum 25(OH)-D, PTH, calcium (Ca++), phosphorus (PO4), total protein, and albumin levels were determined. Brain computed tomography (CT) scans were used to show BGC. Treated and early-mid-stage patients were selected. Results: The level of 25(OH)-D in serum were lower in patients with PD than the control group (p< 0.001). The level of PTH was found higher in patients with PD, but it was not statistically significant (p> 0.05). BGC was present three patients (9%) with PD and two subjects (6%) in the control group. The presence of BGC was not statistically significant in patients with PD compared with the control group. There were no correlations between lower 25 (OH)-D and PTH concentrations in patients with PD; however the level of PTH, which plays a role in the vitamin D metabolism, was not found different, and the presence of BGC, which plays a role in the calcium metabolism, was not found different compared with healthy subjects. Conclusions: The low level of 25 (OH)-D should cause poor control of Ca++, PO4; however the level of PTH and the presence of BGC were not different significantly. | en_US |
